Your passport won't scan at the automatic gate

Many foreign passports lack the RFID chip gates need. Use the staffed lane — it is normal and expected.

No scan !

Many foreign passports lack the gate's RFID chip.

What you'll see

If the gate rejects your passport, it is almost always the chip, not you:

"Passport not recognised" · "Please use manual lane"
中国 App / 闸机显示为:无法识别护照 / 请走人工通道
Error-text level: L2 (observed wording). Exact on-gate text is being verified on a live device.

Why it happens

Many foreign passports do not carry the RFID chip that automatic gates read, so the gate cannot match you to your e-ticket. Staffed lanes read it manually.

Fastest fix, free: Look for the staffed lane, show your passport and the e-ticket QR code, and allow 10-15 extra minutes. Almost every station has one.

The full fix sequence (free)
  1. Find the staffed lane (人工通道); almost every station has one.
  2. Show your passport and the e-ticket QR code in your app.
  3. Arrive 10-15 minutes earlier to clear the manual lane.

When the fast fix isn't enough

In the kit

When the manual lane is crowded, the kit helps you find it fast.

1. The gate phrase card (CN + EN)

Show this to staff: ask where the manual lane is.

2. The trigger matrix

Which passport types need the manual lane.

3. Offline printable version

The phrase card and map as a printable card.

If nothing works

If the manual lane is closed or you are in a hurry:

  1. Ask any uniformed staff member to scan you through.
  2. Try the gate again after rotating the passport or using a different page.
  3. Allow extra time next trip and locate the manual lane on arrival.
