Why it happens

Children under 1.2m ride free (no seat), 1.2-1.5m pay half, over 1.5m pay full. Elderly get no discount but station staff help with boarding and luggage.

Fastest fix, free: Add the child as a passenger with their passport; pick the half-price option if 1.2-1.5m. elderly need a normal ticket plus may request wheelchair help via 12306.

The full fix sequence (free)
  1. Under 1.2m: free, no ticket needed (no seat).
  2. 1.2-1.5m: buy the half-price child ticket with the child's passport.
  3. Over 1.5m: full-price ticket.
  4. Elderly: normal ticket; call 12306 ahead for wheelchair assistance.

If the app rejects the child's document:

  1. Go to a station window to add the passenger in person.
  2. Try the other app (12306 vs Trip.com) with the same document.
  3. Ask staff to help board and with luggage for elderly travellers.
