Your card works on Amazon and Booking.com, then Alipay or WeChat Pay rejects it. This is the single most common problem foreigners hit.
The card binds fine, or appears to bind, then fails at the moment you actually pay. Sometimes it fails during binding instead. The wording differs by app:
Usually it is not the Chinese app rejecting you — it is your own bank blocking a China-originated transaction as a fraud precaution. Card network matters too: Visa and Mastercard have the widest acceptance, while American Express, Discover and JCB are accepted by far fewer merchants.
Three things solve the cases that the four steps above don't. They are in the offline kit so they work with no signal and no battery-draining reloading.
Four yes/no questions put you on the right branch. Reading all four paths takes longer than walking the one that is actually yours.
Bind your card to Alipay first, then add Alipay as the payment method inside WeChat Pay. Direct binding to WeChat fails far more often than binding to Alipay, so this route works when the obvious one doesn't.
| Condition | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| American Express / Discover / JCB | Limited acceptance. Carry a Visa or Mastercard as backup rather than relying on it. |
| First transaction is large | Start with a small payment. Large first charges trigger risk checks more often. |
| Account created today | New accounts get flagged more. Wait 24 hours before concluding the card is the problem. |
| Roaming SIM, no Chinese number | Verification codes may not arrive. This is a separate failure with a separate fix — see the related case below. |
Work down this list. Most people never get past the second line, but the rest exist so a payment failure never leaves you stranded:
Most travellers know about three of these before they fly. This one is usually one of them — the others are often not.
